Systems Administrator

for our Kentish Town based London office.

Welcome aboard AUTOMATIK VFX, a London & Berlin based boutique VFX studio providing a full spectrum of digital image creation; from fantasy creature animation and sci-fi robots to historical world building and interplanetary environments. Operating mostly as the sole vendor we cover everything from conceptual design pre-shoot, through post-vis to the final delivered VFX - working closely with the show running VFX supervisor our department supervisors have a huge creative say in the films and TV shows we create.

You will be incorporating your innovation-driven support on our team working with the latest in VFX software (e.g. Nuke, Maya, etc.), facilitating data management, OS configuration, render farm maintenance, and workstation support, and much more, for a large number of Linux and Windows systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • to liaise directly with the IT department in Germany regarding infrastructure maintenance and development
  • to support the Pipeline TD achieving the pipeline goals
  • to identify problems, develop and implement efficient solutions
  • Python scripting
  • Linux server administration
  • Workstation built/upgrade/diagnostics/repair/config/support (hardware and software), relocation/provisioning on a large scale and preparing for new starters according to their profiles, management of artists’ licences
  • Interacting with artists on a daily basis, on the phone and in person.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field
  • Experience with Linux/Unix, Windows, Mac OS
  • Hands-on hardware experience; builds, upgrades, repair.
  • Solid experience of system development in a Linux or other Unix-like environment in either C, C++ or Python
  • Advanced scripting knowledge (Powershell, Bash, or Python)
  • Understanding of fundamental data structures and their performance characteristics
  • Understanding of colour spaces and colour pipelines
  • Experience in TCP/IP networking, Firewalls, VPN Tunnels and Secure Authentication

You will be incorporating your art-driven unique perspective on the project brief for the best aesthetic and technical approach.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • to composite live-action shots with CG Elements, including 2D tracking, layering of elements, colour grading and extracting mattes
  • to develop visual solutions for specific effects in conjunction with the VFX supervisor and team leads to keep up with Automatik’s high-end visual effects standards
  • execute assigned shots that are creatively and technically excellent in the fastest way possible
  • to proactively collaborate and communicate with other departments, with Production and with Leads to ensure seamless integration of all elements, meeting schedules and deadlines
  • to follow creative briefs and implement feedback from team leads and the VFX Supervisor
  • to work well in a team environment, to show enthusiasm to learn and develop professionally
     

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficiency and experience with Nuke on feature film projects
  • Strong artistic background, with an eye for detail, composition, colour and lighting
  • Excellent communication skills, including proficiency in the English language, ability to understand and apply shot notes
  • Ability to structure Nuke scripts and creative workflow to facilitate efficiently conceptual changes
  • A positive attitude and the ability to remain calm under pressure to meet deadlines
  • EU citizenship or an existing UK work permit
     

DESIRABLE SKILLS:

  • Experience using Shotgun
  • Experience working in a Linux environment

Senior VFX Coordinator

You will be liaising with all aspects of production and post-production: Director, Editor, external VFX Supervisor and Producer, in-house Producers and Supervisors as well as artists.

As central point of contact, you will manage tasks and targets crucial to the delivery of the project on time and on budget.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • to set up, maintain and deliver a project in close collaboration with the VFX Producer and VFX Supervisor
  • to organise and attend daily reviews
  • to assess the progression of established project plans
  • to ensure communication flow from the Supervisor to the Leads, crew or other departments
  • to proactively communicate issues to the Producer and Supervisor, remind deadlines
  • to keep the production database and folders tidy and up to date
  • to serve as organisational contact for clients, to communicate changes and to prepare client approval sessions
  • to run submissions and deliveries
  • to help in managing / improving editorial workflows


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous experience at VFX Coordinator, Senior VFX Coordinator or Line Producer level on feature film projects
  • In-depth understanding of the 3D VFX & post-production pipelines and knowledge of current image and video formats
  • Experience in working with Shotgun, Linux and Mac
  • Basic editorial knowledge
  • Outstanding organisational skills
  • Excellent communication and team-working skills to achieve efficiency in managing artists and communicating with clients
  • Proficiency in MS Office particularly in MS Excel
  • Ability to establish priorities and multi-task within a high-pressure environment
  • Apt to handle sensitive data with diligence

You will be incorporating your art-driven unique perspective on the project brief and navigate your team for the best aesthetic and technical approach.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • to produce high-end photoreal 3D imagery
  • to maintain quality control for all 3D outputs
  • to identify problems, develop and implement efficient solutions
  • to liaise directly with the VFX & Comp Supervisor / Producer regarding bidding, scheduling, pipeline development
  • to manage and oversee the 3D team in all aspects for the assigned sequence
  • to attend dailies/rounds and provide constructive feedback for compositors to finalise shots
  • to mentor junior CG Artists when necessary

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent project management, communication and organisational skills
  • Adaptable and a lateral thinker with a passion for effective problem solving
  • Ability to work with the VFX Supervisor and Comp Supervisor to plan the creative and technical approach to each show
  • Experience in leading a 3D team throughout the creative and technical process to deliver a high standard of work on time and within budget
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience using Maya and Arnold essential, some Houdini knowledge a plus
  • Motivated team player who can take directions well
  • Good English language skills
